The Qatar World Cup 2022 is coming to an end, and little by little the candidates for various individual prizes have emerged. Among them, the one that usually arouses the greatest expectation is the FIFA World Player of the Year award.
Winning the title of Best Player in the World Cup is a historic achievement and one of the greatest honors in football, and in this World Cup there are many names who are ultimately chosen to receive it for their impressive performances.
Messi and Mbappe find a serious rival
Before the semi-finals of the World Cup, everything seemed to indicate that the two main candidates who would be chosen as the best player in the tournament were Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
Both players are the best in their respective teams, and thanks to their goals and assists, both teams made it to the long-awaited final. However, another name came up, who, if he does great in the final, could end up taking home the award.
This is Antoine Griezmann. The Atletico Madrid player made a great match against Morocco, to be chosen by FIFA as the best player of the match. In addition, in the previous Tours, he was the absolute leader of the team led by Didier Deschamps.
Despite this, Antoine’s impressive performance was overshadowed by Mbappe’s goals and assists, but now, with France reaching the final, there are already doubts about who really deserves the award.
Griezmann, the all-around player in Deschamps’ national team
In this World Cup in Qatar, Antoine Griezmann was able to show all his talent and intelligence on the green lawn. The player gave up his main position in the attack, which he usually occupies with Atletico Madrid, to play as a real third midfielder, accompanying Aurelien Tchouameni, Adrien Rabiot, or Youssef Fofana, who occupied this position in the semi-final match instead of the Juventus player.
In this new demarcation, Griezmann shone in both the offensive and defensive aspects. While with the ball, he has nursed Mbappe, Giroud and Dembele with three assists – the most in the tournament – and made as many as 21 important passes – and is also the World Cup leader in this aspect.
The Atletico Madrid player has sacrificed himself the most for the team and starred in several top-level defensive positions in his area. For all these reasons, Griezmann was able to break into the battle between Mbappe and Messi for the World Cup’s best player award.
